Rich retired in 2003 from the City of Orange after spending over 35 years in municipal recreation. He has been married for 41 years to Peggy, and has four married daughters and ten grandchildren.
Rich began officiating high school football, basketball, and baseball in 1966. He has been a Division I official for basketball and football since 1983. He was selected to referee the NIT Basketball tournament three times and the NCAA Division II championship game in 1996. Rich was selected as an official for the 2001 NAIA National Tournament in 2001. He was a Big West Conference football Side Judge from 1984-94 and became a Referee in 1995. In 2001, Rich joined the Mountain West Conference as a Referee. As a football official, he has worked in seven bowl games, three as a referee.
Rich is the coordinator of basketball, baseball and football officials for 28 community colleges and NCAA DIII baseball in Southern California. He is responsible for organizing and developing the Southern California Collegiate Baseball and Football Officials Association which has a membership of over 500 officials serving 73 colleges. In 2005, Rich was selected as the Commissioner of the South Coast Conference. The South Coast Conference consists of 11 member institutions in the Southern California area.
Rich currently operates 3 basketball officiating camps, brining in attendees from all over the country. He maintains a website, www.dayofgame.com, dedicated to sports officiating.
